Friday 26th Sept.: Recognition of National Sign Languages

In Uganda, deaf people face high risks during disasters and health emergencies when information isn’t accessible in Ugandan Sign Language (UgSL). COVID-19 and floods showed how vital interpreters are, yet services remain patchy.

The Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) continues to push for deaf inclusion in crisis planning, interpreter services, and visual alerts. Uganda has ratified the UNCRPD, obliging it to protect persons with disabilities in emergencies.

Deaf rights in crises are human rights—and inclusion must be built into every response.
