Uganda has made progress in inclusive education through schools for the deaf, teacher recruitment, and supportive policies. Yet deaf learners still struggle, with poor performance in national exams pointing to gaps in teaching and support.
The Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) calls for a multilingual approach that prioritizes Ugandan Sign Language (UgSL) and cultural sensitivity. This means training teachers in UgSL, developing tailored curricula, and ensuring interpreters are available.
Inclusive education in Uganda can only succeed when deaf learners are taught in a language they understand, giving them equal opportunities to thrive.
