Since 1973, Uganda’s deaf community has fought for recognition—winning a milestone in 1995 when Ugandan Sign Language (UgSL) was written into the Constitution.
Through the Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD), deaf leaders continue to push for interpreters in schools, courts, and public life. Their motto, “Nothing about us without us,” shows why real progress comes when deaf people lead and allies stand beside them.
UNAD’s programs empower deaf youth, women, and rural communities to claim space in education, jobs, and society. Uganda’s story proves that inclusion only works when deaf communities set the agenda.
