Signs of Change: International Week of Deaf People Takes Over Mbarara Independence Grounds

The day opened with an awareness march flagged off by the Mayor, moving from Mbarara City Council to Independence Park. A cultural interlude set the tone for the programme, after which dignitaries and guests toured exhibition stalls where partners showcased innovations and products that advance Deaf inclusion. The Deputy Mayor officially welcomed all, the chief guest led a light warm-up, and speakers delivered remarks—including Hon. Alex Ndeezi, Hon. Hellen Asamo, and a representative from NUDIPU. Highlights included appreciation for ongoing government efforts to extend sign language access in public institutions such as the police. Performances featured poems by Mbale School for the Deaf and the Kampala Deaf Youth Team, followed by the anthem and lunch.
