Tuesday 23rd Sept.: No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights

On the International Day of Sign Language, we are reminded that equality for deaf people is only possible when sign language rights are fully recognized.

In Uganda, with over 1.9 million deaf and hard of hearing people, the Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) leads the way in promoting Ugandan Sign Language (UgSL), protecting deaf culture, and ensuring deaf-led initiatives guide training and development.

Uganda’s Constitution and disability laws recognize UgSL, and UNCRPD obligations reinforce the right to accessibility and participation. Yet, progress depends on deaf leadership, professional interpreters, and government consultation with UNAD.

Sign language rights are human rights—and securing them is key to building an inclusive future for Uganda’s deaf community.
